The North Carolina–based singer-songwriter Anjimile unveils “Auld Lang Syne II,” a luminous and introspective new single produced by Brad Cook (Waxahatchee, Mavis Staples). The track marks Anjimile’s first release since his emotionally unflinching 2023 album The King, ushering in a new chapter defined by softness, resilience, and a deep embrace of freedom.
Characterized by delicate finger-plucked strings, warm horn arrangements, and Anjimile’s gently disarming vocal performance, “Auld Lang Syne II” steps forward as an intimate meditation on transformation, time, and the quiet beauty in holding onto one another through life’s shifting seasons.
A Song That Grew Beyond a Gift
Originally intended as a wedding present for a close friend, the song evolved into something more expansive during the writing process.
Anjimile shares:
“'Auld Lang Syne II’ was originally intended as something of a wedding present for my best friend, who got married a few years back. During the writing process, though, it transformed into something of a musing on the bittersweet nature of the passage of time - not just for my friend and her husband, but for me and my family and my close relationships”

A New Era Rooted in Joy, Freedom, and Tenderness
With the release of The King in 2023, his celebrated debut on 4AD, Anjimile intensified his exploration of Black and trans existence, confronting personal and political upheaval with courage and emotional clarity. The album led him across the U.S. on a headline tour and to stages at Pitchfork Music Festival in both London and Paris.
Now, “Auld Lang Syne II” ushers in an era shaped not by turmoil, but by release. It’s a testament to the power of change, transformation, and the generosity that comes with allowing love, from others and from oneself, to enter fully.
A Distinctive Voice in Modern Indie Music

Anjimile (ann-JIM-uh-lee) Chithambo’s rise began in Boston’s indie scene during his time at Northeastern University. His blend of introspective lyricism, spiritual inquiry, and sonic subtlety caught early critical attention, particularly after his NPR Tiny Desk Contest entry was recognized as Boston’s best in 2018.
His 2020 breakout album Giver Taker earned widespread acclaim — Rolling Stone named it one of the best albums of the year — cementing his status as an artist whose work feels both deeply personal and universally resonant. He has since toured alongside artists like José González, Tune-Yards, and Hurray for the Riff Raff, releasing the covers EP Reunion (2021), featuring contributions from Jay Som, Sasami, and Lomelda.
