Blood Sucking Maniacs Announce Self-Titled Debut Album, A Multigenerational Family Project Led by Terry Allen and Jo Harvey Allen

The family ensemble Blood Sucking Maniacs, led by Terry Allen and Jo Harvey Allen, released their self-titled debut album on April 24 via Paradise of Bachelors. A Release Show is set for May 21st at The Paramount Theatre in Austin, TX.

Spanning five generations of the Allen family, the project brings together a wide network of collaborators in a release that blends storytelling, spoken word, and roots-driven songwriting.

The album has already received strong early attention from outlets including The Austin Chronicle, Paste, The A.V. Club, The Vinyl District, and The Wire.

The Austin Chronicle describes the record as:

“an irreverent 22-track odyssey” led by “a multigenerational family band,” highlighting its sense of history, humor, and continuity across generations.

Writing on standout track “Down to the River,” Paste and The A.V. Club note:

“The world stops when Terry and Jo duet… just two good, curious people talking about going someplace prettier than a postcard.”

Meanwhile, The Vinyl District emphasizes the project’s conceptual scope, describing it as:

“a thorough evasion of norms, much less clichés,”

and The Wire frames the album as:

“a kind of exquisite corpse as family scrapbook… a freewheeling conversation around a big dinner table.”

At its core, Blood Sucking Maniacs is structured as a family collective, featuring contributions from Terry Allen and Jo Harvey Allen, along with their sons Bukka Allen and Bale Allen, and their grandsons Kru Allen, Sled Allen, and Calder Allen.

The album also incorporates archival material from Pauline Allen, extending the project’s timeline across more than a century of family history, and features the youngest generation through the recorded heartbeat of Lucky Marlo Allen.

Beyond the immediate family, the project expands to include longtime collaborators such as Lloyd Maines and Richard Bowden, alongside Charlie Sexton and Will Sexton, connecting the record to a broader Texas musical lineage.

Across its 22 tracks, the album moves between structured songs, spoken-word passages, and instrumental interludes, creating a format that resists traditional categorization. Blending elements of Americana, alt-country, and experimental composition, the project balances narrative storytelling with a loose, exploratory structure.

Down to the River,” in particular, emerges as a central piece, anchored by the interplay between Terry Allen and Jo Harvey Allen, whose collaboration defines the album’s emotional core.

Blood Sucking Maniacs marks Terry Allen’s first collection of all-new recordings since Just Like Moby Dick (2020).

The release will be available as a deluxe gatefold double LP featuring an insert booklet with lyrics and an essay by Brendan Greaves, author of Truckload of Art: The Life and Work of Terry Allen.

A release show is scheduled for May 21 at the Paramount Theatre in Austin, Texas.

For Terry Allen and Jo Harvey Allen, the project reflects a multidisciplinary approach that merges music, visual art, and storytelling.

The album positions family not only as subject matter, but as a structural and creative framework, where collaboration, memory, and lineage shape both the sound and the narrative.

“The Allen family’s life has been as much an inspiration for me as Terry’s wonderful art and music.” – David Byrne

“Terry Allen is my hero.” – Kurt Vile
