Maurizio Malagnini Brings the Heart of East London to Life in Call the Midwife Volume 2

Dubois Records has released Call the Midwife (Original Soundtrack Album, Volume 2), featuring music by Emmy-nominated, internationally award-winning composer Maurizio Malagnini, giving fans a new way to experience the emotional world of the beloved series.

Spanning the 1960s through the 1970s, Malagnini’s score brings the heart of East London vividly to life. Through lyrical themes and sweeping orchestration, the music captures the warmth, resilience, and intimacy of Nonnatus House, reflecting the humanity and quiet strength that define Call the Midwife. The soundtrack invites listeners to revisit the series’ most touching moments while uncovering new emotional layers through music.

Volume 2 features 27 tracks that blend new musical ideas with fan-favorite themes, weaving together orchestral richness and intimate, character-driven melodies. The score mirrors the vibrant community of Poplar, honoring both the joy and hardship experienced by its residents, and underscoring the deep connections at the core of the series.

Reflecting on his work, Malagnini shared:

“It has been an incredible journey to write the music for the extraordinary stories created by Heidi Thomas. By immersing myself in the world of her characters, I have tried to give voice to their inner souls, their fragility as well as their resilience.
Heidi has a unique ability to give voice to the voiceless and to bring to screen stories that might otherwise remain untold. Through the music, I’ve aimed to express the parts of these stories that cannot be spoken, capturing the hidden emotions written deep within the hearts of her characters.
I have laughed with them, cried with them, fallen in love with them, I’ve stood at their side, and I’ve even jumped onto a train destined to crash in Season 11! My hope is that these melodies will keep you company and allow you to feel these emotions once again.”

Emmy-nominated composer Maurizio Malagnini is known for his emotionally rich and deeply human approach to scoring. Over more than a decade, his work on projects including Call the Midwife, The Paradise, Coppelia, and Peter and Wendy has earned him widespread acclaim for blending lyrical orchestration with powerful storytelling insight.

Created by Heidi Thomas and produced by Neal Street Productions for the BBC, Call the Midwife chronicles the lives of midwives working in East London during the mid-20th century. Praised for its authenticity, emotional depth, and social commentary, the series has become a global favorite with a devoted fanbase.

Call the Midwife (Original Soundtrack Album, Volume 2) is available now via Dubois Records. Fans can stream the album today and revisit the series on PBS, experiencing the enduring spirit of Nonnatus House through Malagnini’s evocative score.
