Plain Mister Smith returns with another riveting single before releasing his new album this April. “Dream to be free” is now available on all major streaming platforms. A reflectively emotional piece of music, new single “Dream to be free” combines the lyrical expertise of Bryce Dessner with the sonic appeal of The Smiths or Tame Impala. Following up a collection of infectious singles including “Andy Warhol”, “Miss Sunshine”, and “We Were Called The Foxx”, the new track further shapes what's to come on the upcoming album. Produced in Plain Mister Smith's home studio with polished drums recorded by the talented John Ratham, the single was mixed by Chris Perry.
Conceptually, “Dream to be free” takes its inspiration from a trip Plain Mister Smith took in Kyoto. During this trip, Diamonji time was in full effect, which is a festival where locals light giant bonfires aflame to guide spirits back home. According to Plain Mister Smith, the experience was
“a mesmeric reflection where memories came flooding back - how such a trip to a far away place can seem like an ultimate act of freedom, or it can be a more subtle escape from home.”

A veteran of Canadian indie scenes, Plain Mister Smith (formerly of Moev and Cinderpop, and current cellist with the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra) blends indie pop, baroque folk, and psychedelic sensibilities. His sound draws inspiration from an eclectic range of artists including The Beatles, Bryce Dessner, Matt Maltese, Led Zeppelin, and The Zombies, and even 20th-century classical composers like Prokofiev, who subtly influence his layered, string-laced arrangements. Plain Mister Smith may call Vancouver home, but his songs wander freely. With his brand new music, he invites listeners to take that first step with him into a world that is whimsical, thoughtful, and richly textured.
