The Enigmatic Foe Release Fifth Album Like an Ocean

The Enigmatic Foe, the project led by Jared Colinger, returns with Like an Ocean, the artist’s fifth studio album, now available on streaming platforms.

Written between 2022 and 2025 and shaped in the aftermath of the pandemic, the record brings together eleven tracks that explore disconnection, emotional fatigue, and the search for stability in an increasingly fragmented world.

Described by Jared Colinger as his “pandemic album,” Like an Ocean centers on themes of distance, longing, and mental health, framing them within a sound rooted in indie rock and atmospheric pop. Across the album, Colinger examines the tension between modern life, marked by technology and constant distraction, and the enduring human need for connection, purpose, and belonging.

The album was mixed and mastered by Christopher Colbert (known for work with Nathaniel Rateliff, The Walkmen, and Pedro the Lion) at National Freedom.

Sonically, Like an Ocean blends indie rock, new wave, and pop sensibilities, balancing melodic accessibility with introspective lyricism.

The album was preceded by a series of double singles, each offering a different entry point into its conceptual world.

“Lover…Lover” examines codependency shaped by isolation, pairing melancholic themes with a more hopeful melodic structure, while “Replaced” revisits an early demo from 2002, reframing it as a reflection on letting go.

Tracks like “Autopilot” and “The Waking Dream” address depression and attention fatigue, using surreal imagery to mirror a world increasingly mediated by technology.

“Algorithm,” inspired by Fleetwood Mac's Tango In The Night, focuses on the loneliness tied to digital validation, while “Limping to the Finish Line” turns toward existential uncertainty and collective resilience.

In addition to the standard album, a deluxe edition titled Flotsam is also available, featuring the exclusive track “Wave Voyager” alongside remixes and additional material.

Based in Knoxville, Tennessee, Jared Colinger has developed The Enigmatic Foe as a long-running project blending indie pop, rock, and new wave influences.

With Like an Ocean, the project expands to include contributions from Jonathan Swift Behr, adding new instrumental layers to Colinger’s established sound.

Like an Ocean is available now on streaming platforms.
