The Enigmatic Foe returns today with an exciting double single, “Algorithm / Limping to the Finish Line,” offering the first glimpse into the project’s forthcoming album, Like An Ocean. Led by American producer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jared Colinger, the release is available now on all major streaming platforms. Listen to “Algorithm / Limping to the Finish Line” here.
Blending groovy rhythms with shimmering electronica and new wave textures, the paired tracks explore modern disconnection, vulnerability, and perseverance. Released together as companion pieces, the songs balance introspection with melody-driven optimism, setting the emotional tone for what’s to come.
“Algorithm” examines the subtle loneliness born from seeking validation in an increasingly digital world. Inspired by Fleetwood Mac’s Tango in the Night, the track pairs smooth vocals and delicate nylon guitar with a melancholic pulse, reflecting on fleeting connections and the emotional cost of living within both metaphorical and literal algorithms.
On the flip side, “Limping to the Finish Line” turns its focus toward uncertainty, mortality, and the importance of solidarity during difficult times. Glittering production softens the weight of its lyrical themes, offering comfort amid a backdrop of overwhelming news cycles and collective fatigue.
Together, the double single introduces the sonic and thematic core of Like An Ocean, The Enigmatic Foe’s fifth studio album, due later this year. Recorded between 2022 and 2025 across various home studios and mixed and mastered by Chris Colbert at National Freedom, the album reflects on the lasting societal impacts of COVID, touching on mental health, loss, and the fragile hope of healing.
A Knoxville, TN native, Jared Colinger has been crafting genre-blending music since the early 2000s, weaving indie pop, rock, and new wave into deeply personal storytelling. Like An Ocean also marks the addition of multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Swift Behr, further expanding The Enigmatic Foe’s evolving sound. With its thoughtful lyricism and uplifting indie-pop rhythms, the upcoming release promises moments of reflection and relief for listeners navigating uncertain times.
