Composer Tomás Videla releases La Casa De Los Espíritus (Banda Sonora Original De La Serie De Amazon Prime) or The House of the Spirits (Original Soundtrack from the Amazon Prime Series), now available alongside the series streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
The eight-episode adaptation of Isabel Allende’s novel, recently named a Variety Critic’s Pick, follows multiple generations of the Trueba family in Chile, with music that mirrors both its emotional intimacy and historical scale.
For the series, Tomás Videla developed what he describes as a “cinematic folk” language, blending orchestral writing with traditional South American instrumentation.
The score combines recordings from a Budapest orchestra with regional guitars and percussion, incorporating tango-inspired techniques into the string arrangements to reflect the story’s emotional and cultural depth. Rather than separating the series’s magical realism from its narrative, the music integrates it directly into its structure, allowing atmosphere, character, and history to coexist within a single sonic framework.
Reflecting on the process, Tomás Videla explains:
“Finding the musical identity for The House of the Spirits meant honoring the South American musical roots of the setting while embracing the show's massive cinematic scope. We established the main theme early on, often centering it around the guitar, allowing it to transform through different instrumental voices to match different characters and the passing of time across the family's history. The orchestra served as the emotional glue, connecting the different generations of women in the Trueba family through every era. We treated the 'magical realism' not as a separate element to be highlighted, but as the very fabric of the score trying to mirror Isabel Allende's prose. The soloists truly brought that South American spirit and magical realism to life with their performances. Being part of this adaptation was truly an honor, and I couldn't be happier with how the series and its sound have come together.”
The House of the Spirits traces a century of political upheaval, personal conflict, and generational memory through the lives of the Trueba family.
The score supports this narrative by evolving its central themes across time, often anchored by guitar-led motifs that shift in tone and orchestration as the story progresses.
Los Angeles–based composer Tomás Videla works across film, television, and concert music, often combining orchestral composition with regional and hybrid influences. His recent work includes projects for Apple TV+, Netflix, and Disney, as well as contributions to documentary and narrative features.
Beyond screen scoring, his compositions have been recognized at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, and his work spans both large-scale productions and independent film.
