UNLUST is a music project from cinematographer Joshua Zucker-Pluda and features filmmaker/musician Jae Matthews (Boy Harsher).

Originally conceived as a personal project, UNLUST began as an escape for acclaimed cinematographer Zucker-Pluda during sleepless nights in between waves of desire and depression. With a broken Roland TR-77 and his guitar, he churned out noisy and visceral songs. What began as something private found form when a friend introduced Matthews and Zucker-Pluda, who bonded over a shared love of cinema, particularly the films of Andrzej Żuławski, Claire Denis, and David Lynch. Film is the common language between Zucker-Pluda and Matthews, and UNLUST exists as much in image as it does in sound. The music is both cinematic and atmospheric, pulsating with no-wave tension and desire.

Zucker-Pluda brings an established visual pedigree to UNLUST. Though newly entering the music space with this project, he has long worked closely with musicians. As a cinematographer, he has shot music videos for Metallica, Saweetie and Doja Cat, Kali Uchis, Deafheaven, and Jon Batiste, and has collaborated with directors including Dave Meyers and Alex Garland. His commercial work includes campaigns featuring Hunter Schafer, Sky Ferreira, Sophie Thatcher, and Lupita Nyong’o. In 2025, he was named one of American Cinematographer’s Rising Stars and was nominated for Cinematographer of the Year at the Hollywood Music Video Awards.
The project has grown over the years to include close friends and collaborators; featuring contributions from Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Aaron Harris (Isis), and Ben Greenberg (Uniform). The EP was recorded by Ben Greenberg and Chaz Sexton, produced by Joshua Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv), mixed by Chris Coady, and mastered by Greg Calbi.

The debut EP was initially released anonymously as a cassette, circulating privately among friends. The first public pressings sold out immediately. The artwork is designed by Collin Fletcher, hand-printed and numbered, featuring imagery by performance artist and filmmaker Ashley Vex. The cassette is accompanied by a music video directed by Sean Stout and shot by Zucker-Pluda.
