Last week, I had the opportunity to attend a very special advanced screening of Avatar: Fire and Ash at the DGA Theater. The film brings a darker tone to the original story with the addition of a new tribe known as The Ash People. Be prepared for a three-hour journey filled with battles and warmhearted moments, offering deeper insight into some of our most beloved characters.
The event on Thursday, December 4th, included an exclusive Q&A with Disney Legend and Grammy winner Miley Cyrus, where she shared more about her collaboration with James Cameron. The songwriter of “Dream As One” said:
"It actually started at Disney Legends. I was patiently waiting my turn and I was standing behind Harrison Ford, Jaime Lee Curtis and James Cameron. I've always been the one to find opportunities, so I told all of them that I was available to do music."
She also added about her relationship with Cameron: "He reached out to me to write this song and the connection between us came really easily".
Cyrus had about two weeks to put the song together for the film. She says she prefers it that way because it allows her to keep the composition very honest, where perfection isn’t the goal, but rather adding as much truth as possible to the song. Her research included watching the unfinished film in three different versions while it was still in post-production. She was also able to observe how the actors interacted with one another, despite it being a heavily CGI-driven movie.
The singer also shared an intimate moment from her life, when her Malibu home burned down in the 2019 fires: "I really related to the title 'Fire and Ash' in a very personal way". The lyrics mention “dimonds in the dark,” referencing the fact that one of the few items she was able to retrieve from the fire was a diamond from her collection, a gem that can withstand extraordinary pressure, mirroring the pressures carried by the characters across the film.
“Dream As One” is now available on all streaming platforms, and you can already pre-order the vinyl featuring the full score from the movie here.
