mmj, Solo Project from Purity Ring’s mj, Signs with Captured Tracks Ahead of Spring Tour

mmj, the solo project from mj of Purity Ring, has signed with Captured Tracks and is set to make their live debut on an upcoming North American tour. Starting this week, mmj will open all 29 dates of Purity Ring’s tour with a series of intimate solo performances, offering audiences an early introduction to the project.
Positioned as a departure from their work with Purity Ring, mmj explores a more stripped and textural sonic space. The project draws from folk songwriting traditions while incorporating elements of dream pop and shoegaze, creating a sound that feels both familiar and refracted through a more atmospheric lens, built with an emphasis on tactile production, analog processes, physical instrumentation, and vocal immediacy.
The music centers on sensory experience and emotional presence.
Reflecting on the project, mj shares:
“This solo project has been a long time coming, it fills me with joy to finally be sharing it. Thank you for sticking with me all these years, thank you for being here and getting here however you have. I hope you find what I do in the songs that will come out of this project. I hope you can hear in them how they were made, and what they invoke in our humanity as physical creatures that respond to senses. I hope you find this to be a sensory experience that pulls you into a world of things you didn’t know you’d lost. This music is built around all the things I've loved. They're folk songs refracted through a haunted lens. Everything has been touched by real hands, tape, tubes or all the above. Everything I sing I feel with my whole body. All of me is in this and I hope it becomes a part of you too.”
The project will be introduced live through a series of acoustic solo performances opening for Purity Ring, beginning April 17. The tour spans cities across North America, including stops in California, Texas, Florida, New York, Toronto, and Vancouver, positioning mmj within an established touring circuit while presenting the project in a more intimate format.
With the signing to Captured Tracks and a full tour underway, mmj marks the beginning of a new creative chapter for mj, expanding beyond Purity Ring's established sonic identity into a more personal and exploratory space.
