On April 3rd, Thundercat released his new album Distracted via Brainfeeder Records, marking his long-awaited return following a period of continued creative expansion.

The project features contributions from A$AP Rocky, WILLOW, and Tame Impala, alongside production from Greg Kurstin, Flying Lotus, and Kenneth Blume.

With four albums and multiple Grammy Awards under his belt, Thundercat returns with a project that reflects both artistic growth and a broadened sonic scope.

Distracted brings together a wide range of collaborators while remaining anchored by his distinctive vocal and compositional style. The album explores a layered sonic landscape, balancing intricate musicianship with a fluid, expressive vocal presence.

At its core, Distracted navigates the tension between overstimulation and introspection in an increasingly fragmented digital landscape.

Throughout the record, Thundercat reflects on the contradictions of technological progress, juxtaposing childhood imagination with the realities of modern innovation. The result is a project that moves between humor, reflection, and quiet critique.

As Thundercat explains:

“Sometimes you need to be distracted to focus in a different way”

A standout moment on the album, “Funny Friends (feat. A$AP Rocky)” highlights one of Thundercats defining qualities: his ability to merge humor with emotional nuance.

Built on warm harmonies and a steady groove, the track delivers understated lyricism and a subtly psychedelic atmosphere, capturing the complexities and contradictions within personal relationships.

In the lead-up to the release, Thundercat has remained active across music and culture, appearing at Paris Fashion Week with Rick Owens, performing alongside A$AP Rocky on Saturday Night Live, and making appearances across television and live platforms.

His recent years have also included collaborations with artists such as Gorillaz, Silk Sonic, Kaytranada, and Justice, as well as ventures into acting, including a role in Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett. The bassist also joined Yo Gabba Gabba for a special performance at NPR’s Tiny Desk and appeared as a featured musical guest on the rebooted Yo Gabba Gabbaland for Apple TV+.

While Distracted engages with the complexities of modern life, its perspective remains grounded in openness and creative resilience.

Reflecting on the project, Thundercat shares:

“Just enjoy it and have fun, and just know that the struggle is real and changes shape, but just to keep pushing forward.”
