Toronto-based coldwave duo TRAITRS return with “Dream Drowning,” the final single ahead of their forthcoming third album Possessor, due out March 13th. The track marks another step in the band’s evolving gothic soundscape, blending analog horror textures, pulsing drums, and eerie synth work into a cinematic meditation on the subconscious.
“Dream Drowning” dives into the emotional residue of dreams, reflecting on how fear, memory, and everyday anxieties surface in the liminal space between sleep and waking. With urgent rhythms and shadowy atmospheres, the song captures the cyclical nature of modern dread looping, unresolved, and deeply human. It’s a track that balances introspection with momentum, maintaining TRAITRS’ signature tension between dancefloor propulsion and introspective melancholy.
Longtime fans of post-punk and coldwave will recognize the duo’s lineage in the echoes of The Cure, Joy Division, and New Order, yet “Dream Drowning” feels distinctly contemporary. TRAITRS continue to refine their aesthetic, both sonically and visually, crafting immersive worlds that merge gothic imagery with emotional vulnerability.
The single arrives as anticipation builds for Possessor, an album produced by longtime collaborator Josh Korody and mastered by Matt Colton. The record follows the critically acclaimed Horses in the Abattoir and continues the band’s exploration of dystopian themes, melancholic melodies, and anthemic hooks.

To celebrate the album’s release, TRAITRS will embark on a North American tour this spring, kicking off in Toronto on March 13th and concluding in Ottawa on May 16th. The tour promises to showcase the band’s hypnotic live presence, which has helped them grow from DIY cassette releases to millions of streams and international stages.
With “Dream Drowning,” TRAITRS offer a haunting glimpse into Possessor, a record poised to further cement their place in the modern post-punk and coldwave revival while pushing their sound into darker, more cinematic territory.
