Högni Releases APEX (Soundtrack from the Netflix Film), An Organic Score Rooted in the Natural World

Icelandic composer Högni unveils APEX (Soundtrack from the Netflix Film), now available alongside the film’s global premiere on Netflix.

Departing from conventional thriller scoring, the project embraces an entirely organic approach, building a sonic environment shaped by the physical landscape in which it was created.

Composed on location in Australia’s Blue Mountains, the soundtrack was developed over two months, with Högni intentionally avoiding electronic instrumentation.

Instead, the score draws from natural acoustics and environmental inspiration, incorporating woodwinds such as oboes and bassoons to create textures that echo bird calls and animal movement. The result is a soundscape that mirrors the film’s setting: expansive, unpredictable, and at times disorienting.

At its core, APEX explores a duality between human emotion and the surrounding wilderness.

Högni describes the process:

“The score for Apex grew out of a search for a musical language that could hold both the physical vastness of the landscape and the inner tension of the story… It’s a score about opposing forces held in balance: control and surrender, instinct and awareness, human and wilderness.”

This contrast is reflected in the music itself, where structured orchestral themes intersect with more fragmented, instinct-driven passages.

APEX follows a grieving woman navigating the Australian wilderness, where survival becomes intertwined with a dangerous and increasingly psychological confrontation.

Högni Egilsson is an Icelandic composer and performer whose work spans film, television, and concert music.

His recent projects include the score for Touch (Focus Features, 2024) and the Netflix series Katla. His work has been recognized by outlets such as Variety and Screen Daily, and he received a 2025 Nordic Film Music Awards nomination.

Beyond screen work, Högni has collaborated with groups including Hjaltalín and GusGus, while continuing to develop a body of concert compositions, including Symphony No. 1, premiered by the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra.
