Singer-songwriter Jai’Len Josey releases her debut album Serial Romantic via Def Jam Recordings, marking a major milestone in a career that spans songwriting, performance, and theater.
Executive produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Tricky Stewart, the album brings together collaborators including The-Dream, Leon Thomas, Theron Thomas, and Ben Parris, positioning the project within a wide-ranging contemporary pop and R&B landscape.
Rooted in R&B while extending into cinematic pop, ghettotech, and soul, Serial Romantic reflects a multidimensional approach to songwriting and production. Across the album, Jai’Len Josey blends emotional storytelling with a dynamic sonic palette shaped by influences ranging from Donny Hathaway and Aretha Franklin to Fleetwood Mac and The B-52’s.
The project also draws from visual and narrative inspirations, including Black Mirror and American Horror Story: Coven, as well as films such as The Exorcist and Carrie, reinforcing its cinematic structure.
At the center of Serial Romantic is a conceptual framework built around an alter ego, “Josey,” through which Jai’Len Josey explores themes of identity, desire, and self-perception.

As she explains:
“I wanted to write a psychological love story told through the narration of the author who is essentially my alter ego ‘Josey’… She cycles through personas, outfits, and behaviors. She believes that if she performs well enough, she’ll finally be chosen.”
The album traces this arc across multiple emotional states, ultimately arriving at a point of self-recognition and resolution. Songs such as “Love Ain’t Shit,” co-written with The-Dream and produced by Tricky Stewart, foreground the album’s emotional core, pairing understated production with direct lyrical expression.
Meanwhile, the title track “Serial Romantic,” produced by Josey herself, incorporates elements of Detroit house through driving basslines and layered textures.
Reflecting on the track, she notes:
“My mind goes a mile a minute… I needed to make the beat sound just as chaotic.”
The closing track, “I Believe,” serves as the album’s resolution, shifting toward a more introspective tone as it centers on self-worth and emotional clarity.
Before releasing Serial Romantic, Jai’Len Josey built a diverse career across music and performance. She appeared on Broadway in The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage! and established herself as a songwriter, contributing to Ari Lennox’s Age/Sex/Location, including the Gold-certified track “Pressure.”
Her work has earned recognition from outlets such as Billboard, NME, ESSENCE, and VIBE, and has received support from artists including SZA, Kehlani, Doechii, Coco Jones, and Ludacris.

Reflecting on the project as a whole, Jai’Len Josey shares:
“To me, the record is a nice ball of genre-bending… It’s a whole bunch of real-life stories mixed in with different genres.”
She adds:
“I want people to take away a newfound ability to break a cycle… I needed release from all of these experiences, so I don’t carry them into the next phase of my life.”
Serial Romantic is available now via Def Jam Recordings.
